Fruit Smoothies with lots of fresh fruit

It all started when I graduated from College and moved home for a year. At the time, my older brother,(RIP Brian) had a juice route and he would bring home gallons of juice daily. I started drinking the juice and never stopped. I never liked soda so at the time I would always drink OJ. Boy was I happy!. Water bottles were not really around when I was in College, I’m aging myself. I always worked out at the gym so I could drink lots of juice and not gain weight! When you’re in your 20’s, and from all the running around, having fun and going out partying in the city, you need your sugar from the juice, Right? Hee Hee! I really hope no one takes my health opinions seriously because I am not a doctor, nor am a nutritionist but it works for me.

smoothieSo, I am now a senior and they still say you need to eat your fruit, so, I drink it! My morning staple in the smoothie is an orange,an apple and a banana. I also add frozen blueberries, strawberries when I can buy them fresh or frozen and whatever other fruit I like, pineapples and mangoes are so very yummy when they are around fresh and sweet!  I usually find the mangoes frozen, they are one of my favorites! Another staple in the smoothie is Greek Yogurt and Pure Vanilla Extract, which I make myself. That’s another post. I never add veggies. Show me the fruit! YUMMY! See photo to the left.

One of the secrets to aging well starts with the foods we put on our plate every day. A balanced diet, filled with superfoods, can help us maintain healthy cognitive function and strong bones as we age, and even prevent chronic disease. Superfoods should be a staple of any healthy meal plan for older adults.

What is a superfood?

Superfoods are not a distinct food category on their own. Rather, this heroic-sounding name simply describes whole, minimally processed foods that are nutrient dense. Generally, superfoods contain healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other compounds found to promote good health and prevent illness and disease. While most are plant-based, certain fish and dairy products may also be considered superfoods.

What superfoods should older adults eat? No single superfood provides all the nutrition we need. That’s why it’s important to eat a wide variety of nutritious foods daily.
